Today was my first day off since arriving in South Africa so I headed off to watch the match between Holland and Denmark - which Holland won 2-0. This is the first time I’ve ever experienced a World Cup match as a fan as I’ve always worked at previous World Cups. And it was a great game to go to - I even spotted a few Jamaican supporters in the stands waving the Jamaican flag.
The atmosphere in the stadium was electric and I bought myself one of the controversial Vuvuzelas which are fantastic fun. I don’t understand what all the fuss is about - modern players moan a lot and I feel that they are making a mountain out of a molehill. The Vuvuzelas are part of the culture of football matches here in South Africa and I’m delighted I got a chance to use one. They are quite noisy, but it shouldn’t put off professional players.
In the second match of the day, Japan beat Cameroon – the second Asian team to have played very well in their opening match after the Korea Republic’s win over Greece last week. Japan were organized, disciplined and showed good structure. I believe that if you have a good attitude, determination and structure – you will do well in this tournament.
In the last match of the day, Italy drew 1-1 against Paraguay. Once again, Paraguay were very strong, organized and disciplined. What is becoming a trend in this World Cup for me is that a lot of the big teams aren’t beating the weaker teams because the weaker teams – like the Korea Republic and Japan – recognize that it’s not just about talent, it’s about getting the basics right like discipline and structure.
My next day off is on Sunday and my son is coming out to join me at the match between Brazil and the Ivory Coast. This should be a very exciting game and I’m really looking forward to a good day of football with my son.
